The singer is the first man to be featured solo on the December cover of Vogue, Variety reported. The magazine, founded on Dec. 17, 1892, has featured men on its cover 10 times, but this is the first time a man has been featured alone on the cover.

The former One Direction member is featured on the cover wearing a lace-trimmed dress and tuxedo jacket created by his friend, Alessandro Michele, People reported. Styles is shown blowing up a balloon, with the headline, “Harry Styles Makes His Own Rules,” underneath the cover photograph, the magazine reported.

Styles also posed topless in a Chopova Lowena kilt-inspired skirt, according to CNN.

In the Vogue article, Styles talks about his plans to visit Tokyo, ruminates about his music and discusses his choice of wardrobe, CNN reported.

“I think with music it’s so important to evolve -- and that extends to clothes and videos and all that stuff,” Styles said in the Vogue article. “That’s why you look back at David Bowie with Ziggy Stardust or the Beatles and their different eras -- that fearlessness is super inspiring.”

Styles also talked about his sartorial choices, Variety reported.

“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with," Styles told Vogue. "What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away. When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play.”

Styles also addressed social movements, noting that he believed in “karma,” Variety reported.

“I’ve been trying to read and educate myself so that in 20 years I’m still doing the right things and taking the right steps,” Styles told Vogue. “I believe in karma, and I think it’s just a time right now where we could use a little more kindness and empathy and patience with people, be a little more prepared to listen and grow.”

The photos that appeared in Vogue were taken by Tyler Mitchell, CNN reported. Mitchell’s career got a boost in 2018, when he became the first Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover, featuring Beyoncé.
